Thanksgiving in Oakville 2026 | Downtown Oakville Weekend Guide

Thanksgiving Weekend in Oakville: A Local Guide for 2026

Thanksgiving Weekend | October 10-12, 2026

Thanksgiving weekend is coming up, and Downtown Oakville is one of the easiest places to spend a fall day without having to plan too much.

The trees are starting to change, the waterfront is still comfortable for a walk, and Lakeshore Road has plenty going on between restaurants, shops, bakeries and a few special events happening over the long weekend.

There is not a large Thanksgiving festival scheduled downtown this year, so the weekend is less about one big event and more about putting together a day around the waterfront, Downtown Oakville and Old Oakville.

Here is what is happening and what is worth knowing before heading downtown.

Saturday, October 10

Shopping and lunch downtown, followed by one of the Oakville Museum's special adult walking tours.

Sunday, October 11

A quieter waterfront morning, family walking tours at the Museum and dinner or Thanksgiving treats downtown.

Monday, October 12

Thanksgiving Day is quieter. The waterfront remains a great option, parking is easier and some businesses operate on holiday hours.

Saturday: Spend the Day Downtown

Saturday is the best day of the weekend if you want the full Downtown Oakville experience.

Start closer to the waterfront and work your way up towards Lakeshore Road. From there, the downtown is small enough that you can walk most of it without needing to move the car.

Stop for coffee or breakfast, walk the shops along Lakeshore and leave some time for lunch before heading towards the Oakville Museum in the afternoon.

The Museum is running a special Oakville and the Underground Railroad walking tour on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The tour looks at the early Black settlers who helped shape Oakville and finishes with an outdoor walk through Downtown Oakville highlighting the town's connection to the Underground Railroad.

Saturday's tours are for adults and advance registration is required.

Sunday: A Good Day for Families

Sunday works well if you are looking for something to do before Thanksgiving dinner or have family visiting for the weekend.

Start with a walk along the waterfront and through the residential streets around Old Oakville before heading onto Lakeshore Road.

The Oakville Museum is running a family version of its Underground Railroad tour on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. These tours are designed for children and teenagers ages 10 to 17 accompanied by an adult caregiver.

If you have younger children, I would keep things simpler. Walk downtown, stop for lunch, head towards the lake and make an afternoon of it.

It is also a good day to pick up anything you still need for Thanksgiving dinner.

Pick Up Something for Thanksgiving Dinner

If dessert is the part of Thanksgiving you would rather leave to someone else, there are a number of bakeries downtown.

Kelly's Bake Shoppe at 259 Lakeshore Road East has a dedicated Thanksgiving menu available from October 5 through October 12, with seasonal desserts available for pickup and local delivery.

They are also advertising holiday hours for both Thanksgiving Sunday and Monday, which makes it one of the easier downtown stops over the long weekend.

Planning ahead: Thanksgiving orders can sell out, so pre-order anything you specifically want rather than leaving it until Monday afternoon.

For bread, pastries, pies and other last-minute additions, there are several other bakeries and specialty food shops along Lakeshore Road as well. Holiday hours will vary by business.

Make a Reservation if You Are Eating Downtown

Downtown Oakville has become a much better place to go out for dinner over the last few years, and there is enough variety that you do not need to build the weekend around a traditional turkey dinner.

If Thanksgiving dinner is happening at home on Monday, Saturday or Sunday night is a good excuse to do something completely different.

Italian, French, Indian, Mediterranean and more casual options are all within a few blocks of one another along Lakeshore Road and the surrounding streets.

The one thing I would not do is assume you can walk into your first choice with a larger group. Thanksgiving weekend is busy for family dinners, so make a reservation if there is somewhere specific you want to go.

Thanksgiving Monday: What Is Open?

Monday is the statutory holiday, so Downtown Oakville will be noticeably quieter.

The Oakville Museum is closed on Monday, along with Oakville Public Library branches and a number of Town facilities.

Restaurants, cafés and shops set their own Thanksgiving hours, so check directly with the business before heading out.

The waterfront, parks and residential streets around Old Oakville are still an easy option if you simply want to get out of the house after a long Thanksgiving lunch.

Parking on Thanksgiving Monday: payment is not required at Downtown Oakville's metered on-street spaces on statutory holidays. The downtown parking garage has separate holiday rates.

A Simple Thanksgiving Day Downtown

If you have family visiting and just want an easy few hours out of the house, I would keep it simple.

Park downtown, walk along Lakeshore Road, head down towards the waterfront, grab a coffee or something sweet and take the longer route back through Old Oakville.

You do not really need a destination. The downtown and lake are close enough together that it works well as one long walk, with plenty of places to stop along the way.

It is also a good way to see why walkability continues to be such a big part of the appeal of Old Oakville.

What Is Happening After Thanksgiving?

If you are around for a little longer, Downtown Oakville moves straight into its Halloween programming after the long weekend.

Boos & Brews begins Tuesday, October 13, with guided ghost walks through Downtown Oakville followed by drinks at participating restaurants.

The event continues on select Tuesday and Wednesday evenings through October 28, followed by more Halloween programming later in the month.

So Thanksgiving weekend is really the start of a busy few weeks downtown.

Thanksgiving Weekend at a Glance

Saturday: Downtown shops and restaurants are your best bet, with the Oakville Museum's adult Underground Railroad walking tours in the afternoon.

Sunday: Walk the waterfront, have brunch or lunch downtown and book the family version of the Museum walking tour if you have older children.

Monday: Expect a quieter day. Town facilities are closed, business hours vary, metered street parking is free and the waterfront is always an easy option.
